People using cholesterol treatment drug are eating more calories - KSBY San Luis Obispo News

People taking statins to treat high cholesterol are eating more calories now than people who took the drugs 10 years ago, according to a new study.

A new study out of UCLA compared the calorie and fat intake of statin users in 2009 to those who took the drugs in 1999.

Researchers found calorie intake went up almost 10 percent during that time, and fat consumption went up nearly 15 percent.

Researchers say two factors could be at play: doctors might be prescribing statins to people who eat more, or statin users don't feel the same need to eat as healthy as they did in the past.
